2nd International Criminal Justice Summer Course: workshop reports now available!

From the 3rd until the 6th of July 2018 the Criminal Justice Platform Europe organised the 2nd edition of the Criminal Justice Summer Course together with the Centre of Legal Studies and Specialised Training in Barcelona. The conference was attended by 56 participants from seventeen countries.

The aim of the Summer Course is to examine key practice issues, inspire new thinking, promote cross-fertilisation and build new networks to improve services and practice in prison, probation and restorative justice. This years theme was radicalisation and violent extremism.

The summer course existed of a combination of workshops, plenary sessions and field visits. The workshops were delivered by seven experts:

  • ‘Characteristics of violent extremist offenders’, by David Hansen, Liesbeth van der Heide and Maarten van Leyenhorst.
  • ‘Exploring alternatives to detention’, by Ioan Durnescu and Oomar Shariff Mulbocus.
  • ‘Reimagining violent extremism restoratively’, by Gema Varona, Claudia Mazzucato and Guido Bertagna.

As one of Europe’s largest gatherings of criminologists, the ESC annual conference brings together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from around the world to exchange knowledge on crime, justice, and social responses. This year’s theme was “Logos of Crime and Punishment,” inspired by classical Greek philosophy.

The honour was officially presented on 25th July 2025 at a formal ceremony held at the Japanese Ambassador‘s residence in London, hosted by the Japanese Ambassador.
