Recap: Webinar on Alternatives to Detention

On 18 January 2024, the first session of online webinars on the topic of alternatives to detention took place. The meeting welcomed more than 30 practitioners from across the world who shared and discussed their experiences and knowledge with us. Ms. Fiona Deacon, Senior Probation Officer and Strategic Lead for women in Greater Manchester, delivered a presentation on the women’s problem-solving court sentence, an alternative to custody. The presentation covered success stories, the program’s development, and explored how re-offending rates are measured.

The PSC has been operating within the area of Greater Manchester for almost 10 years and more than 500 women have completed it since 2017. The Greater Manchester area has the lowest reoffending rate for women in England and Wales. The PSC provides a whole-system approach with various stakeholders involved and being part of it.

The presentation is available here.
