CEP at ESC 2025: Penal Policy Transfer and Ageing in Prison in Focus
The Confederation of European Probation (CEP) had a strong presence at the 25th Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology (EUROCRIM 2025), held in Athens from 3 to 6 September 2025. As one of Europe’s largest gatherings of criminologists, the ESC annual conference brings together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from around the world to exchange knowledge on crime, justice, and social responses. This year’s theme was “Logos of Crime and Punishment,” inspired by classical Greek philosophy.
Iuliana Carbunaru shared insights from her doctoral research on the transfer of criminal justice policies across Europe, presenting a five-step model designed to support future penal reform and probation development.
In another session, Daniel Danglades joined Netanel Dagan, Christopher Seeds, Helen Gair, and Marion Vannier for a panel on the experiences of older prisoners from incarceration to release. The discussion covered topics such as justice, compassionate release, staff roles, sentencing policy, and vulnerability, with comparisons across the US, UK, Israel, and France.
Both contributions highlighted CEP’s mission to bring together research, policy, and practice, while encouraging more humane and effective justice systems across Europe.
