CEO of Probation Board for Northern Ireland recognised in New Year Honours list
Chief Executive of the Probation Board for Northern Ireland (PBNI) Cheryl Lamont has paid tribute to her colleagues and family after being recognised for her work in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. The New Year Honours list for 2020 recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom. Cheryl Lamont was appointed Deputy Director of PBNI in 2007 and interim Director in 2013, before being appointed as Chief Executive in November 2016. She is also a recipient of the Winston Churchill Fellowship and is a qualified social worker.
Cheryl Lamont was speaking after becoming Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Ms Lamont said: “I am humbled and delighted to be the recipient of this award which recognises not only my role, but the work of the Probation Board for Northern Ireland. I would like to pay tribute to the colleagues that I have worked with in probation over the last 35 years and justice over the past 37 years. Those men and women have worked tirelessly to make Northern Ireland safer and prevent people becoming victims of crime. I am very lucky to have worked with such dedicated and committed public servants. I am proud to lead an organisation which works in every community delivering services that reduce reoffending and rehabilitate people.”
She added: “I also want to thank my partner and family for their invaluable support over many years. Indeed, that support alongside strong family values of community and helping others in need, have greatly assisted me on my chosen career path.”
Ms Lamont also wanted to pay tribute to colleagues across the Criminal Justice Sector with whom she has worked in partnership with. She said: “Working in partnership with colleagues in Ireland, Great Britain and across the rest of Europe has been a very important part of my role and I want to thank justice leaders for their support over many years.”
Congratulating Cheryl Lamont on her award, Chairman of the Probation Board Dale Ashford added: “This is a wonderful recognition of Cheryl’s leadership of PBNI and contribution to criminal justice in Northern Ireland. Over the last number of years Cheryl has played a key role in ensuring PBNI leads the way and innovates within the criminal justice system. The Probation Board and staff are delighted that Cheryl has been recognised with this richly deserved honour.”

Recap: Expert Group meeting on Violent Extremism

On 12–13 March 2026, the Expert Group on Violent Extremism convened for an in‑person meeting in Bucharest, Romania. Hosted at the University of Bucharest, the meeting brought together practitioners and representatives from across Europe to finalise the overview of best practices for preventive interventions targeting juveniles and young adults up to the age of 26 under probation. Building on the extensive discussions and progress made in 2025, the group worked collaboratively to bring the document to completion.

Recap: CEP Expert Group meeting at ATGV Antalya

The CEP Expert Group on Electronic Monitoring, along with representatives of the CEP Office led by Mr. Daniel Danglades, CEP Vice-President, visited the Education and Social Facility of the Ministry of Justice in Türkiye – ATGV Antalya. The host country was represented by a high-level delegation, including Deputy Director General Mr. Fatih Güngör, Head of the Turkish Probation Department Dr. Hüseyin Şık, Member of the CEP EM Expert Group Ms. Elçin Kilecioğlu, as well as the Director and representatives of the ATGV facility, and officials from the courts, prosecution, and probation services in Antalya.

Recap: CEP Expert Network on Education and Training in Probation meets with the European Commission to discuss the EU Judicial Training Strategy

On 11 March 2026, the CEP Expert Network on Education and Training in Probation met online with more than 20 participants from Belgium, Denmark, Sweeden, France, Romania, Croatia, Catalonia, Poland, United Kingdom and Türkiye to exchange views with the European Commission on the newly adopted EU Judicial Training Strategy 2025–2030.
The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for representatives of probation training institutions across Europe to engage directly with European Commission officials and discuss how the strategy may impact the training of probation and prison staff in the coming years.

Understanding the needs of girls and young women in youth justice

New research highlights the underlying needs that influence girls’ and young women’s contact with youth justice systems and calls for more gender responsive approaches in policy and practice. Drawing on a review of recent studies, the authors identify several factors shaping girls’ pathways into the justice system, including persistent abuse, trauma, gendered expectations, and systemic failures. Girls involved in youth justice are often affected by multiple forms of victimisation, such as sexual abuse, neglect, and domestic violence, with experiences frequently beginning in early childhood.
