Reflections from the practitioner’s point of view
In print or as an e-book, Ashgate has published a new book on probation by John Deering, entitled Probation Practice and the New Penology. Practitioner Reflections.
According to the author, the book has an original point of view. In his view, the traditional rehabilitative focus of probation has fallen behind, allowing the punitive aspects to take over. In this book, practitioners are given a voice as opposed to politicians, managers and theoreticians – all of whom have had a lot to say about probation over recent decades – and therefore tries to get at ‘real practice’ – i.e. what practitioners say they do, rather than what these other groups say probation is about.
