CEP at UNODC: Contributing to the Development of Probation Services Worldwide
The Confederation of European Probation (CEP) was represented by its Secretary General, Jana Špero Kamenjarin, at the Expert Group Meeting on the Establishment of Probation Services and Probation Practices, organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) from 12 to 14 October 2026.
The meeting was opened by Ms Aimee Comrie, Chief of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section at UNODC, and chaired by Mr Philipp Meissner, Interregional Adviser and Team Leader at UNODC. In his opening remarks, Mr Meissner highlighted the cooperation between CEP and UNODC, including the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two organisations in 2023.
The Expert Group brought together representatives from different countries and continents to discuss the draft Handbook on Probation, prepared by Ioan Durnescu, CEP Honorary Member, and Shane Bryans. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge, share experiences and explore approaches to the establishment and development of probation services in different national contexts.
CEP’s participation offered a valuable opportunity to contribute European perspectives and practical examples to the international discussion. Working alongside colleagues from across the globe reinforced the importance of international cooperation and knowledge-sharing in strengthening probation services and promoting effective probation practices worldwide.
CEP welcomes the continued cooperation with UNODC and looks forward to further opportunities to contribute to the development of probation services internationally.
