International Training School on Core Correctional Skills, 6th edition, 2026
Welcome to the International Training School on Core Correctional Skills 2026, where continuous learning is an essential part of professional practice. This one-week programme is aimed at experienced correctional and probation staff seeking to refresh their skills, as well as professionals new to the field who want a strong, practice-focused introduction.
Based on Prof. Dr. Ioan Durnescu’s Core Correctional Skills, the training strengthens key competencies for effective probation work, including relationship skills, pro-social modelling, problem-solving, motivational interviewing, and cognitive restructuring. In 2026, these core skills are explored specifically within the context of digital probation.
2026 special topic: Clicks and Empathy: Core Correctional Skills in Digital Probation
As supervision increasingly takes place through video calls, messaging applications, online platforms, and hybrid forms of contact, the central question becomes how to maintain trust, engagement, and change-focused communication in digitally mediated interactions.
Throughout the week, participants will explore how core correctional skills can be applied in digital settings, including:
- building rapport and presence when contact is remote or time-limited
- using micro-skills (tone, pacing, questions, reflections) to foster warmth and clarity online
- dealing with miscommunication, silence, and disengagement in digital interactions
- maintaining professional boundaries while remaining empathic and responsive
- adapting role-plays, coaching, and structured exercises to online supervision contexts
A strong focus is placed on the working alliance, including role clarity, power dynamics, and sustaining effective relationships online. Pro-social modelling, motivational interviewing, problem-solving, and cognitive restructuring are integrated throughout, emphasising the need for intentional and skilled human engagement in digital supervision.
The Training School uses modern adult-learning methods and a highly practical approach, with role-play, coaching, feedback, and skills rehearsal designed to support direct transfer into everyday probation practice.
