CEP International Training School on Core Correctional Skills 2024, 4th edition

From 7 till 11 October 2024 the fourth edition of the  International Training School of Core Correctional Skills took place in Barcelone! Over the course of five days, 28 participants from across the globe came together to enhance their understanding of key correctional techniques, practice essential skills, and explore how these tools can be applied in their everyday work.

The week began with opening remarks and a thought-provoking keynote on Desistance and Lived Experience from Professor Shadd Maruna. Special guest Andi Brierley from Leeds Trinity University delivered a two-part session on Lived Experience, emphasizing the importance of personal stories in rehabilitation. This theme was further explored during a study visit to the former prison “La Model,” where participants engaged with two individuals sharing their lived experiences with the justice system.

Throughout the week, Professor Ioan Durnescu was the course leader, leading various key sessions. He began with a session on Building Working Alliances with Involuntary Clients, exploring how to foster meaningful relationships with resistant individuals. Later in the week, alongside Ms. Anna Esquerrà Roqueta, he led a practical session on Pro-social Modelling, providing participants with strategies to model positive behaviour. Professor Durnescu also co-led a session on Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions with Joe Arvidson, offering participants tools to address thought patterns that contribute to offending behaviour.

Additionally, Professor Durnescu guided participants through a series of practice labs, allowing them to apply these skills in real-life scenarios.

Ms. Iuliana Carbunaru also contributed with a session on problem-solving, guiding participants through structured problem-solving techniques, while Joe Arvidson provided valuable insights into Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions.

The week wasn’t all work—participants enjoyed a walking tour of Barcelona’s Eixample and Gothic Quarter, offering a chance to reflect on their learning while exploring the city’s rich history.

The training wrapped up with discussions on how to integrate the newly acquired skills into daily practice, culminating in a closing ceremony. Participants left feeling inspired and equipped with fresh perspectives and practical tools to bring back to their work.
