Iuliana Carbunaru, Vice President of CEP and currently a probation inspector in the National Probation Directorate within the Romanian Ministry of Justice, was one of the guest speakers at APPA’s 48th Annual Training Institute in New York on August 27-30th. She had the opportunity to give a workshop on “Probation in Europe: Something Old, Something New, Why Not Something Purple?”
The workshop, on the 29th of August, focused on the uneven level of development of probation systems across Europe, with some systems having a history going back 200 years and others recently established. Despite this disparity, the ultimate purpose of probation is similar across all systems – giving back better citizens to society and enforcing court decisions by using the experience, energy of a fresh start, staff skills, and new technologies. The workshop analyzed the impact of European professional networks on the development of probation services, with a focus on the professionalization of staff and the role of technology.
