Technology

We have been living in a rapidly changing world were technologies play an important role. Within a second, we have access to all the information we need and more. Technology in probation has been rapidly changing and expanding as well. Nowadays, technologies such as artificial intelligence, electronic monitoring, smart apps and virtual reality are used by probation officers in their daily work.  Services provided by probation organisations starting from supervision to victim-offender mediation can be carried out online – one of the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Something we could have never thought of a couple of years ago. Not only probation staff but also its clients are able to use technologies. The access to it also created a new sort of offender – cybercriminals. What will come next?

The Expert Group meeting on Technology is one of the longest-operating group within CEP. Its first meeting was held for the first time in March 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The group

The objectives of the expert group are:

to improve co-ordination and co-operation between CEP members regarding the wide spectre of ongoing technological innovation projects in probation;
through its work to support jurisdictions with operational probation professional advice when developing/implementing new technologies;
to provide the opportunity for lead experts of CEP members (policy developers, project managers, ICT specialists etc.) to meet and discuss today’s challenges, solutions and share ideas for further development of the technological domain in probation;
to support policy developments and facilitate data collection (overview on the use of technology);
to create opportunities in implementing technologies and impact and advice in using the emerging technologies in probation practice
through organizing a variety of activities, data collection and practice recommendations to increase the knowledge and practical skills of probation staff.
