The report on What Works on Capacity Building in Probation by Steve Pitts and Leo Tigges, published on the CEP website in March this year, has been critically reviewed by Vivian Geiran, former director of the Irish Probation Service. The review, published in the latest edition of Probation Quarterly from the Probation Institute, sheds light on the enormous task the authors have undertaken in their determination to help probation work achieve its full potential. The review finds that their report, which is described as a “labour of love”, represents a bold, ambitious, and forward-looking step towards improving the availability and practice of probation that will be of particular interest and relevance to authorities in jurisdictions considering the establishment or further development of probation services, as well as those jurisdictions where probation is already established.
