2nd Edition of the Workshop on Gender-based Violence in Probation
We are pleased to invite you to attend the 2nd Edition of the Workshop on gender-based violence in Probation that will take place on 29 November at the Center for Legal Studies and Judicial Training in Barcelona, Catalonia – Spain.
In this workshop, CEP will open up the topic of gender-based violence in probation to address gender inequality, especially towards women and girls, with a focus on sexual abuse and domestic violence. The workshop will cover the topic from the perspective of probation and other criminal justice professionals including offenders and victims. With this workshop, we will discuss the effective and efficient ways of working with offenders, which programmes and technologies are used to prevent gender–based violence, support the treatment process, among others.
A Round table session will hold a close discussion and exploration ¨How do we work transnationally on gender-based violence¨.
A World Café session will bring together smaller groups of participants to discuss and share knowledge and experience from their jurisdictions. Thus, it will support mutual learning as one of the core skills necessary for further professional development both of themselves and their organisations.
Background
In past years we have seen an alarming rise in domestic violence including intimate partner violence. Domestic violence in its very essential definition covers the violence which causes physical, psychological, sexual, emotional and economic harm which happens at home and affects both males and females including vulnerable groups of children, elderly people, people with mental and learning disorders or physical disabilities. The definition of domestic violence is narrowed down to intimate partner violence which occurs solely among current and former partners. Whilst gender-based violence can take forms of psychical, sexual and psychological violence is directed against a person because of gender. It can be experienced by all genders, however, the majority of victims are women and girls.
Probation bodies and practitioners across Europe and worldwide together with other criminal justice professionals are among those in the frontline of preventing violence by supervising and providing specialized treatment and programmes, guidance and assistance to offenders. These programmes are developed in line with the practice of restorative justice which brings the concern for victims first and at the same time it learns offenders to take responsibility for the crime committed and with professional support from probation practitioners and other professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists etc) to make an important and positive change in their lives.
To support all aspects of rehabilitation and at the same time treatment process there is a need for cooperation among various actors starting from offenders to probation, criminal justice and law enforcement agencies, NGOs, victim support, restorative justice, communities and families.
Over the past years, we have seen that European societies are far less tolerant of violence, especially domestic, intimate partner and gender-based violence, which is reflected in national laws, persons´ attitudes and national learning systems. Yet, this has not stopped some persons from committing crimes and bringing harm to victims. It is important to remember that any kind of violence causes severe harm not only to victims but to families and communities as well.
