Objective and Scope of the Conference

Probation is a fundamental component of the criminal justice system, playing a crucial role in the reintegration of offenders into society. However, public perception of this system is of great significance in terms of its effectiveness and acceptance. This conference aims to analyze public perceptions of probation practices across Europe, share best practices, and discuss the necessary steps to enhance this perception positively in the future.

Bringing together experts, academics, and policymakers from different countries, the conference will explore solutions to make the probation system more transparent, accessible, and comprehensible to the public. Key objectives include increasing public awareness of probation, fostering public confidence in the system, and strengthening collaboration with professional stakeholders.

Key Topics of the Conference

  • Public perception of the probation system and societal attitudes toward it
  • The role and significance of probation within the criminal justice system
  • Collaboration between probation services, public institutions, and professional stakeholders
  • Changes in societal attitudes toward sanctions and measures, along with future perspectives
  • Strategies to promote probation and best practice examples

This conference seeks to emphasize that the probation system is not merely an alternative sanction mechanism but a crucial system for offender rehabilitation, public safety, and social cohesion. Additionally, it aims to contribute to the development of this system through international cooperation and experience sharing.

Public Engagement and Support for Probation

Fergus McNeill – Public Engagement and Support for Probation: In many countries, probation began not as a state-sponsored organisation, but as a civil society initiative to divert people from damaging forms of punishment by addressing their personal and social problems. In most Western countries, as probation professionalism increased, public involvement declined. Fergus’s talk will explore the links between, perceptions, support and involvement, arguing that renewing civic involvement might be the best way to build probation’s legitimacy and its effectiveness.
