CEP

What we do

Learning

The CEP organises seminars, conferences and workshops which bring together managers and practitioners from probation and similar services across Europe together with academics and others working in criminal justice.

Running intensive supervision programmes, tackling drug abuse, involving the community and many more subjects are debated. Good practice is highlighted and information about it is disseminated. Practitioners are given opportunities to learn about each others' systems and to reflect on their own methods.

Reports of recent events are available in the Reports section of this site.

Details of forthcoming CEP events and events organised in conjunction with the CEP will be available in the Events section of this site.

The CEP has commissioned the production of Probation and Probation Services - A European Perspective, a unique source book on the organisation and working methods of probation services in 19 European countries.

Developing

The CEP provides a unique source of advice to governments and those working for them on developing their own criminal justice systems.

The CEP can demonstrate how the protection of society is best served by the social inclusion of offenders. Its expert members are able to provide information about community sanctions and measures developed in member countries - how they operate in practice, what they cost, what is needed to organise them, and above all, whether they work.

The CEP has observer status in the Council of Europe and works with other international Organisations.

The CEP meets in General Assembly every three years. The General Assembly elects a President, two Vice Presidents, a Secretary General and a Board of six ordinary members who develop the work of the CEP in line with the decisions made at the assembly. The CEP is a private association according to Dutch law. Its Secretariat is accommodated by the Dutch probation service, the Reclassering Nederland.
